Vodafone Community Connection Award Goes to Band! 15 NOVEMBER 2015

posted 4 Nov 2017, 08:49 by BSS Group-Admin

The group was astounded but delighted to find out that they had won the recent Vodafone Community Connection Award.

The money means that we are now definitely able to go ahead with our marching band project with this funding going towards instruments for the Band.

The group were selected after Vodafone called for nominations for the award in conjunction with the Bradley Stoke Journal. The eventual aim of the Marching Band Project is to have our own Band leading the November Remembrance parades.

The announcement was made in the November issue of the Bradley Stoke Journal with the Vodafone staff (Ajit Deb, Sophie Merritt) and Scout Representatives (Richard Shepherd, Joy Harrison and Katherine Robinson) getting themselves in the picture taken by Editor Stephen Horton.

We would very much like to thank Vodaphone and the Bradley Stoke Journal for this generous award that now means we can offer a new musical opportunity to our young people. We are very fortunate to have two professional music teachers in our leadership team – Richard Shepherd and Glen Mills who will be taking the lead with the project and we have been offered invaluable help and advice from the wonderful 37th Kingswood Drum corps. Band practice is planning to start in January 2016 and we are looking forward to showing the community what we have achieved next November.

Marching Band Open Evening

Last Friday night the group was visited by the amazing 37th Kingswood Drum Corps (http://37thkingswood.weebly.com/) as part of an open evening to generate interest for starting our own marching band.

Around 20 Beavers, Cubs & Scouts attended & were given the chance to have a go at playing the drums & trumpet, plus an insight into the techniques involved in marching.

Our young Scouts had a brilliant time being taught by the experts of the 37th band & by the end of the evening even managed a whole group performance to all the attending parents of “When the Saints Go Marching In”!

The evening was made all the more special by the fact that a lot of the teaching was being done by the young performers themselves. I know that a lot of our group were really inspired to give it a go & we are now hoping to initiate the first stages of starting a small band of our own.

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who came & supported the event, especially all the members of the 37th who gave up their Friday evening to come along & who continue to be an invaluable source of advice & support.

We are looking for adult volunteers to help out with this project, so if you have any musical talents you would be willing to share with our keen young members we would be VERY pleased to hear from you.

Also, of course, we will now need a suitable venue to practice in (one that is preferably removed from any residential areas to reduce the likelihood of noise complaints!) & some instruments to actually play.

We have already had some drums kindly donated by the 63rd Bristol Scouts (who came across them while demolishing their old Scout hut!) but if anyone knows of any redundant brass instruments that are lying unloved in the back of a cupboard somewhere, we would be more than happy to liberate them for you & give them a new lease of life!
